Some researchers identify this woman as the daughter of John Slayton, and others as Mary Slaton, daughter of Willoughby Slaton, Jr. The evidence of Giles County, Tennessee records, where John left a widow Martha (Andrews) Slaton, suggests that Mary belongs on that tree, and not that of Willoughby Slaton. Sharing a very common given name and a similar profile, the woman who reportedly married Mr. Thomas Crabb is certainly the woman at this profile and almost certainly not a daughter of Willoughby Slaton, Jr. Note that the existing tree shows another sibling with the middle name of Elizabeth.
Another supporting fact is that Mary Crabb of Texas was named as an heir in the estate settlement of Matthew Alexander Andrews, along with many other descendants of John Slayton specifically named.[1] See her mother's profile at Martha (Andrews) Slaton for details.
Mary's birth data ranges from census report of 1870, where she is 20 in 1870 (abt 1850) , as opposed to the date of birth (1863) reported on her death cert cited below. A first marriage in 1879 for a woman born 1850 would be considered quite late, while a woman born 1863 would be aged 16 or so. Depositions for her mother Martha (Andrews) Slaton's pension agree with census, stating in 1885 that Mary was 35 years old.
It is not clear if she was middle-named Elizabeth or Jane or both, but the evidence from her parents' records indicate that her parents and siblings were in both Limestone County, Alabama, and Giles County, Tennessee, the state borderline.
Mary married Thomas "C." Crabb, Dec 1879, in a transcribed (modern) marriage index, [2] and the marriage is implied in death certs cited below. The original marriage license is found in the Tennessee state marriage database, with marriage conducted 14 Dec 1879.[3]
Issue in evidence are Addle Lee, [4] Samuel Joseph,[5] and Elizabeth (Lizzie) Crabb.[6]
Mary Crabb passed away in 1930 in Texas. [7]
Mary and Thomas Crabb are found in the 1900 US census in Falls Texas.[8] Listed children are Mary, Addie, Lizzie, and Samuel.
Mary is found as a widow living with daughter Lizzie Riggs' family in Falls Texas in 1920.[9] Lizzie is named as "Nancy E. Crabb" in the death certificate of son John Edgar Riggs.[10]
One month before the marriage of Mary E. Slayton to Thomas Crabb, D. C. Crabb (groom) married E. M. Sleighton, 16 Nov 1879 in Giles County, Tennessee. This is possibly two Slaton sisters (Emily and Mary) marrying two Crabb brothers (Thomas and David). [11]
