Biography

Easter Slatton was born around 1805 in South Carolina. Her parentage is uncertain, but proximity and naming patterns have led some researchers to assume that she is a daughter of Edward/Edmund Slatton, based on proximity of similar relocation pattern (Greenville, S.C.; Hawkins, Tenn; Van Buren, Tenn.; White, Tenn.).

Census records cited below suggest that Easter might have produced at least one daughter recorded as Slatten, suggesting the possibility that Easter was a widow, a separated spouse of a Slatten, or an unmarried mother.

Research Notes - How many Easters?

Another problem with any identification is that an Easter Slatton appears in an 1820 Greenville South Carolina census with household code m10000-f00201. [1] The Easter at this entry would not have occupied the position in the household as a female 45 years and up, but could be one of the females 16-25. Such a name buys Greenville land in 1821, again suggesting a woman more than 16 years old.[2].

Easter reportedly born about 1805 is found in 1850 census [3] with younger people of the same surname: Emalissa (20), and Hetty Ann (10). In 1860, [4] there appears to be a continuation of this household of Easter (50) with Malissa surnamed Bryant (26), suggesting that Emalissa/Malissa married or had children by a Bryant and was mother of Hetty A. (9), Thomas J. (8), and Darthula T. Bryant (6). In 1870, Malissa Briant (38) is in Easter's (60) household with Helen (18), Darthula (17) and Timothy Bryant (16), Timothy showing value of estate as $200, ten times that of his presumed mother Malissa. [5] However, no likely Bryant husband is seen in any of the households.

The Bryants are a constant feature of SC Slatten records back to the early 1800s. Timothy Briant found in the 1870 census with Easter is almost certainly the same man who married Sarah Slatton in White co TN in Oct 24 1878. [6]
