Biography

This profile is part of the Slaton Name Study.

Abram was born about 1835. (Alternative DOB: 1826.)

Abram M. was born about 1826 in Georgia. He is the son of Littleberry Slatton and Henrietta Holcomb. [citation needed] "Family stories" give his middle name as Moses, unverified. His name is also seen as Abraham.

Abram married Julia Ann Taylor, 17 Feb 1848 in Muscogee County, Georgia[1], children in evidence: Joseph Litchfield and Rosalus aka Roland M. Slaton. It is unclear if Julia had died before his next marriage, but it is suggested in court record presented below.

The 1850 Agricultural census for Harris County Georgia shows Littleberry Slaton and on the same page are Abram M. with 120 improved and 70 unimproved acres, George B. and Richard Slaton/Slaten [2], names of sons mentioned in Littleberry's will.

In the 1850 population census, a Henrietta Palmore, 10, is in the household. Abram's sister Rebecca married a Palmer and may have produced this daughter, probably Abram's niece. [3]

Abram married Mary Ann McKinney, 4 March 1856 in Harris County, Georgia [4]. Children: Isabel or Ida Belle, Mary Lou aka "Lulu" aka "Cricket", Purila?, Lucy?, Luther Kirk, Edna S., Dora, Robert Lee "Arlie" and Ida Jane Slaton. Some of these appear with no obvious continuation in census, such as Purila and Lucy, so this is not a certain list.

It appears from court records cited below that two of Abram's children received a legacy, possibly from their late mother's Taylor lineage (?), as they are notated as "orphans of Abram M. Slaton," and Abram, their father, is appointed guardian. Abram is also guardian for Ella M. Slaton, cited below. This Ella is a mystery, noted as an "orphan of Henrietta Slaton," but no issue of his mother Henrietta should have required a guardian by the date of these bonds.

In the 1880 census, he is listed as a carpenter by occupation. Also living in his household was his sister Rebecca (Slaton) Smith, age 78, born in South Carolina. [5]

Research Notes

According to the book "Roster of the Confederate Soldiers of Georgia, 1861-1865", compiled by Lillian Henderson, State Division of Confederate Pensions and Records, an A. M. Slaton was a Private on November 7, 1862 in Company G, 54th Regiment, Georgia Volunteer Infantry, Army of Tennessee. He joined in Muscogee County, Georgia. The roll of February 28, 1863, the last on file, shows him present.[citation needed]

Compiled Service Records of Confederate Soldiers Who Served in Organizations from the State of Georgia contains a muster card for Abraham Slaton, private, for Capt. McKenney's Cavalry Co, Supporting Force of Georgia, Co S, 1 Battalion Reserve Cavalry, shows he enlisted January 29 186__, on muster roll for Jany 19 to Oct 31, 1864, with note "Ordered to be conscribed Apr. 1 1864." (https://www.fold3.com/image/28894716) Note Capt McKenney: Abram had married a woman named McKinney.

He was a member of the Antioch Baptist Church, Harris County, Georgia.[citation needed]

Mystery Ella M. Slaton

The 1860 and 1870 households of Rebecca (Slaton) Smith have a female E.M. Slaton (1860) and Ella M. Slaton (1870) born about 1855, and the court records of her brother Abram Slaton show him appointed as a guardian of Ella M. Slaton, "Orphan of Henrietta Slaton." That an heir of that age would require a guardian is obvious, but what is not obvious is why any issue of the woman at the profile of Henrietta Slaton would require a guardian. All of her known issue were adults at her death, including a daughter Henrietta Slaton (abt.1824-). Who left this Ella as an orphan? Is she a granddaughter of Henrietta who was an heir to a legacy? She is almost certainly not a daughter of Rebecca Smith.

Slaton-832 and Slaton-293 appear to represent the same person because: Slaton-293 is unsourced, but represents the same man as Slaton-832 for a first marriage, which is obvious with a reading of the records at Slaton-832. Having each as a separate entry is pointless, because the "work before they can be merged" is shown at Slaton-832.

Slaton-293 and Slaton-832 do not represent the same person because: Slaton-293 have very little information and few if any resources. Needs work before they can be merged.

Slaton-293 is the same man as Slaton-832, obvious from the census and marriage records shown at Slaton-832, showing similar issue and spouse with blended family from 1850 to 1880. The work has been done and having these as separate entries is confusing and redundant.

They have a different year of birth by about 11 years, no parents mentioned in one or siblings or, spouse. You can always re-submit it for merge.

I did resubmit. There is no "different year of birth" because 293 has no sources at all, so the "about 1835" is meaningless. I have been working these lines for about forty years. You can see that two males with names like Joseph L and "Raleigh" are attributed to 293, and the same names (as Joseph L, J.L. and R.M. and "Rosalus") appear in the continuing census posted at 823. Obvious (to me) as the same man. If you read the 823 court records, it is equally obvious that Abram was previously married because he has "orphans," which can only mean that his wife had died and he was appointed guardian for an inheritance from his wife's family to his "orphan" children.
