William M. was born in 1855. His parentage is not revealed on his death cert [1] Please do not link a parentage based on an uncited family tree.
His census records vary in reporting this birth in either Georgia or Alabama. Descendants assert that he was called "Mack," and some death certs thought to be for his issue children show "Mack" as father, but no documentation for "Maxwell" as a middle given, as some claim, is so far found unless you can find and cite it.
He married Eliza Jacobs, 15 Oct 1874, in Pike County, Alabama [2] and she appears sometimes as Eliza Ann but mostly as Eliza J. Eliza is almost certainly found in Pike County, Alabama in 1870, [3] previous census there shows Slatons who cannot be solidly attributed as part of the family of WIlliam at this profile.
In 1880 census cited in sources, his presumed household is headed by "W. M. C." Slaton. never appearing that way again in census. In the 1900 census, the five youngest of seven children are reported born Indian Territory. Wife Eliza is reported as bearing ten children, eight alive, with six present. William and Maybelle from 1880 are not in the 1900 household. Where and who are the two alive but not in the household?
Issue in evidence: William W., Maybelle, Almer M., John L., Arie Zolar (?) "Zola", Melva, Howard Best and Susie Wilheminia Slaton. One daughter's name appears as a variant of "Ursula" (Arzolar) but she went by "Zola," so this is unclear.
His family is easily traced in census from Pike County, Alabama to Hood County, Texas, to Fort Worth, Tarrant, Texas, where he died in 1947 [1] and is buried [4]. Unfortunately, his 1947 death cert cited above is not helpful, naming only "Slaton" as father and "don't know" for everything but his birth in Alabama on 1 Nov 1855. The informant, Jack Wilson, is almost certainly his son-in-law.

This is recorded here to prompt further research, because there are several Slaton men with the name William reportedly born between 1850 and 1859 and reported with Alabama birth in census.
There is a conjecture among some descendants of this man in Fort Worth Texas, William Mack, is the grandson of Obediah (Slayden) Slayton Sr., whose son William M. Slayton (of Tuscaloosa, Ala.) produced a William b 1850 who appears in one census (1860). But William M in TX consistently has 1855 to 1857 as his birth (but not consistent about whether it is GA or AL). If the Texas man was born Nov 1855, he would likely still be with his parents in 1870. But if he was really born 1850, then at 20 he would just as likely be gone. It is not a bad conjecture, but not enough data.
yDNA from a male or suspected male descendant might help establish which of three known patrilines led down to this William, but cannot determine his father.
