John H. Slatton was born about 1814 in Tennessee to John and Mary Slatton. [1] He married Matilda Murrell on July 11th, 1835, most likely in Hawkins County, Tennessee. [2]
Deeds cited below indicate that John Slatton resided in Tennessee, (inheriting land in Hawkins County from his father) then moved with his family to Lee County, Virginia during the latter half of the 1840s, before a final relocation to the environs of Lexington, Fayette, Kentucky. (Owen and Scott counties). [1] [3]
Their children were: James, William M., Thomas J., Madison "Matt," John H., Benjamin Franklin, Joshua, Mary J., Emiline "Emma," Permelia Ellinder "Ella," and Mathilda "Sis." Son Joshua does not continue into 1860 Kentucky, presumed dead at a young age.
In Scott County, Kentucky the family of John and Matilda Slatton and their ten children lived in what became Precinct No 5, that came to be called "Stonewall." The name of the community of Stonewall suggests that there might be some hostility to a family that was so obviously a "Union" family, as will be seen, but the assertion that it is named in honor of Gen Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson may be post-war revisionism, since dry stone walls as boundary fences are a common feature of this region.
John and Matilda rented lands from Abraham Mallory [4] and later, after John's death, Matilda rented the same "small farm" from Greenberry Mallory, brother to her daughter-in-law Sarah.
Because the Slattons were not landowners and rental agreements are not usually recorded in court records, it is not clear exactly where they were in Owen County, Kentucky, but the Rock Dale precinct in Owen is adjacent to Stonewall precinct in Scott, and there is the mysteriously named Natlee-Slatin Road in Owen County.
Scott County Kentucky Will Book N shows the 1859 division of the lands (and slaves) of John and Mary Mulberry, deceased, which included and Greenberry F and Abraham Mallory along with several Lancasters. [5] In Scott County Kentucky Deed Book 5 page 318, Greenberry purchased 35 acres of Abraham's 126 acre division, Abraham "to give peaceable possession" by 10 March 1860. Clearly mentioned in his affidavit at Matilda's entry, this was the "small farm" where John and Matilda rented land. Later Matilda moved to the lands of "Major" James E Emison.
John died on May 6th, 1858 in Owen County, Kentucky, leaving Matilda with seven children ranging from six months to 17 years old. His youngest daughter states that he was killed by a runaway horse, but she was an infant and presumably retelling what she was told. [3] His burial place is unknown.
An 1836 deed indicating that a John Slatton is an heir of another John Slatton is found in Hawkins County, Tennessee. "This indenture made and entered into this 28th day of June 1836 between John Slatton of the county of Hawkins and state of Tennessee for the one part and William Green of the county and state aforesaid of the other part witnesseth that the said John Slatton ... [sell] all my undivided share of [100 acres] lying and being in the county and state aforesaid on the north side of Clinch Mountain in the first valley from said Mountain adjoining land formerly owned by General Lenore now owned by George Tucker land of John Day and Abraham Hawk...[and in the body, John's name is misrecorded as "said William Slatten" but the context shows this as a mistake, as there was no previous mention of such a name.] [The land] descended to [John Slatten] as one of the legitimate heirs of John Slatton deceased. John Slatton Seal"[6] Note that both parties in this deed are likely legitimate heirs of Capt John Slatton, as William Green had married Rutha, daughter of the deceased.
On the previous page, Lucy (Slatten) Brewer, another heir, his sister, sells to William Green.
In 1837, Hawkins County Tennessee Deed Book 16, page 163, "This indenture made this 28h day of [smudged] 1837 Between Oliver Slatten of the county of Hawkins & State of Tennessee of the one part & John Slatten of the county & state aforesaid of the other part witnesseth that Oliver Slatten hath...sold ... John Slatten his heirs & assigns all that tract of land whereon the said Oliver Slatten now lives....Registered December 28th 1837." This is almost certainly brother Oliver selling to brother John H. Slatton.
In 1840, Hawkins co Tennessee Deed Book 17, page 166, "This indenture made this 7th day of November 1839 between Henry Mitchell ... and John Slatton ...
