Preface

Misleading path- Undocumented and unresearched "links" on FindAGrave and Ancestry trees show this John as a son of William Slatton and Sarah (Honey). William and Sarah did have a son John who is not the man at this profile.

"Jack" and descendants are "honorary" Slattons by name, but almost certainly have no genetic (patrilineal) connection to a Slatton father, but to a Brock.

yDNA results for four male descendants all show high matches to current samplers surnamed Brock, with a haplotype of J-M172, not matching any of the I-M253 "Carolina" male Slaton/Slattons. [1] The four descendants are cousins to one another, not brothers, but only two are shown publicly at the linked site, in Group 220.

Biography

This profile is part of the Slaton Name Study.

Apparently named for helpful neighbor John Slatton Sr or Jr., who, along with Abner Noris [Norris] paid half of the filing fee for Sarah Owen(s) against James Brock:

February 3, 1795, Greenville County General Sessions Court Case Rolls, #197 Statement of Sarah Owen, a single woman, that James Brock of the county "did git her with chile " On recognizance, Securities: John (x) Slatton, 10 lbs, Abner Noris, 10 lbs.

1800 Greenville South Carolina Census, households: #233 Abner Norris, #246 James Brock, #253 John Slatton Senr., #254 John Slatton Junr., #255 Sarah Owens (with one young male).[2]

John was nicknamed "Jack" and he and wife Nancy (Sauls) had six daughters and five sons: Tempie, James E. S., Susan Emmalisa, Martha, Warren D., Jeptha P., John Edward Jr., Nancy, Richard Dyre Talley, Elizabeth M, and Sarah Catherine "Kate" Slatton. (A most common Carolina combination in honor of Warren Ransom Davis might account for Warren D.'s given name.)

John moved from Greenville to Pickens County, South Carolina and then to Jackson County, North Carolina before 1855, suggested by birth places recorded for children and grandchildren in census. [3] [4] [5] [6] [7]

There are place names in Jackson County, North Carolina, carrying the name Slatten in remembrance of his brood, but as usual with this surname, Slatton appears as often as Slatten . See Research Notes.

Named as Jackie Slatton, father to Nancy Ann Slatton Moody in North Carolina death records; Nancy's mother is named as Nancy Sauls.[8]

A group from his family moved to Oklahoma where "Jack" died in the household of daughter Kate Woodring, having attained or exceeded 100 years of age, apparently. He shares her gravestone, but name is carved as SLATEN. [9] [10]

Research Notes

A middle name of Edward is not supported by documentation (so far). However, descendants of a son John state that their ancestor was John Edward Slatton, Jr. implying that this is so.

Descendant Al Hooper states that his favorite expression was "Dod wot it!"

A "family story" passed down to descendants is that the man at this profile was raised in the household one of the John Slattons who appear in the 1800 Greenville census who are enumerated just before Sarah Owens, and in the same district as Abner Norris and James Brock.

Corpl John Slayton - John Slayton was issued a pay voucher No. 295, May 7, 1815, by the State of North Carolina as a Corpl in the "Wake Regiment of Militia," which was redeemed. Considering Jack's reported birth date, the man at this profile might be this corporal. [11]

Jack's family lived in Jackson County, North Carolina, where currently a Slatten Branch (Creek) and Slatten Falls are near a Slatten Creek Drive.

From a section on North Carolina postal service:
"The drivers used a carriage pulled by four horses and they changed the team at each end of the run for the return trip. Two mail routes-Webster to Cashiers and Webster to Highlands-served Jackson County in 1889. Jack Slatten was a mail carrier on the Webster-to-Cashiers route, making the 31 mile trip each [day or week?] on horseback. He was 93 years old at the time." [12]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Jackie by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Jackie:
