Charles Sledge was the son of Richard and Ann Sledge, immigrants who arrived in the "Alithea" in 1681. In Bristol, England they named Penford as their old homeplace.[1] Arrived in America in 1686, per certificate for 50 acres of land for importation of "himself". Certificate dated 7 Nov 1710, Order Book 1691-1713 page 353.[2] The first reported Sledge in America was Richard and Ann Sledge, arriving on the ship Alithea from the port of Bristol as indentured servants, in 1681. They named Penford, England as their home. They are referred to as the parents of Charles in many books.

In 1716 Charles Sledge received two land grants in Surry County, Virginia Colony. The first was for 150 acres and the second was for 100 acres.[3]

Charles Sledge married Mary Clark of Isle of Wight County, thus established connections with the Flake, Hayes, and Clarke families. Charles Sledge died in 1726, and his wife, Mary, in 1728. Their wills are on file in the Virginia archives. Peter Hayes was the executor of Mary (Clarke) Sledge's will.[4][5]

Charles Sledge is thought to be the son of Richard Sledge and Ann Ashley(?), immigrants who arrived in the "Alithea" in 1681. In Bristol, England they named Penford as their old home-place.[8][9]

About 1683, Charles married Mary Clark, the daughter of Robert Clark and Anne Wells. According to Robert Baird, "Charles Sledge lived on land gifted by his father-in-law that was located in western Surry on the waters of Pigeon Swamp, quite close to the border of Prince George County and the family of Gilbert Hay. Later records and nearby patents place the land in the vicinity of the upper reaches of Assamoosick and Pigeon Swamps, where Gilbert Hay witnessed several transactions relating to the adjacent patent of James Jones and where he settled in 1726 on land bordered by the Prince George County line."[10]

The parents of John Sledge were Charles and Mary Clark Sledge the daughter of Robert and Ann WELLS Clark---not Flake as many have thought. Boddie gave some good leads, but now with computers, we can go to the actual records if they survived. jamesssledge

Sailing on the Alithea was set for 1684--at different months for Richard and Ann. There is no evidence that they even sailed, but no matter, it is now known from church records that Charles was christened Oct 7, 1660 son of John Sledge and probably, Martha Fort .jamesssledge
