Biography

Friedrich was born in 1706. He was the son of Christian av Schleswig.Holstein-Sönderborg-Plön and Dorothea von Aichelburg. He passed away in 1761. He was the last Duke of the Duchy of Schleswig-Holstein-Plön. Since he died without legitimate male offspring, the duchy fell after his death back to the Danish royal family.

Friedrich Karl was the son of Christian Karl of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Norburg , (the younger brother of the Plön Duke Joachim Friedrich) , from his unequal marriage to Dorothea Christina von Aichelberg . He was born posthumously after Christian Karl's early death . He first bore the name of Karlstein, but after Joachim Friedrich died in 1722 without male heirs, Frederick Charles was recognized by the Danish King Frederick IV as the successor to his uncle.

1724/25 Friedrich Karl made a gallant tour of German courts and Utrecht , which had in addition to its education also the purpose of promoting its claims to Plön. But it was only with the death of his cousin that Frederick Karl was able to take over the government in Plön. In return, he resigned Norburg to the Danish king again. On 5 November 1729 he moved to Plön. The recognition by the Reichshofrat took place in 1731.

The Baroque prince

Under Friedrich Karl, Plön experienced a cultural flowering. The Duke had the Plön castle built in the Rococo style and expanded the complex around a large baroque garden . Under his court architect Johann Gottfried Rosenberg , the so-called Prinzenhaus and the Plöner Marstall were used to create important Baroque buildings in Schleswig-Holstein . The pleasure palace in Traventhal , which was destroyed in the 19th century, was also modernized on behalf of Friedrich Karls and extended into one of the most elaborate facilities in the country.
Since Friedrich Karl had no legitimate male heir, he exhibited in 1756 the so-called Plönische Successionstraktat , with which he appointed the Danish king heir to his estate. In return, Frederick V promised him all his debts, which in reality amounted to an unlimited loan. After the death of the Duke, the Plön property was contracted to the Danish royal family, which came closer to the completion of the state . The possessions were confiscated, and the Plön residences in Reinfeld , Ahrensbök and Rethwisch were subsequently demolished.

Family

Friedrich Karl married on July 18, 1730 in Copenhagen Christiane Armgardis (Irmgard) of Reventlow (1711-1769), the daughter of the Chief President of Altona Christian Detlev of Reventlow . One son died in childhood, her daughters were

Sophia Christine Luise (* 1732, † 1757)
Friederike Sophie Charlotte (* 1736, † 1769), married to Georg Ludwig II of Erbach-Schönberg
Charlotte Amalie Wilhelmine (* 1744, † 1770), married to Friedrich Christian I of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Augustenburg
Luise Albertine (* 1748, † 1769), married to Friedrich Albrecht of Anhalt-Bernburg

Two of the mistresses of Friedrich Karl are by name handed down: With Sophie Agnes Olearius he led a six-year relationship, from which six daughters emerged, with the chamber wife Catharina Bein he had five children. He provided the women and children of these relationships with money and property. A great-grandson of this line was the Greenlandic Inspector Nicolai Zimmer (1810-1894).
