John Slingsby was born in 1843 in Groby, Leicestershire, England and baptised there on 19th March 1843. He was the son of Philip Slingsby (a labourer) and his wife, Mary.

In 1911, John (68, a granite set maker) and Elizabeth (67) had been married 48 years, had had 12 children of whom 9 were still alive and were living by themselves in Leicester Road, Groby, Leicestershire, England in a 4 room house.
John Slingsby died on 4th October 1928 and was buried on 9th October 1928 in Groby, Leicestershire, England.
