James R. W. Sloane was an abolitionist, a professor of theology, and a pastor of the Third Reformed Presbyterian Church in New York

Biography

James was born in 1823 in Topsham, Vermont, one of nine children born to William and Mary McNiece Sloane. p. 28. [1]

He married Mary Anne Wylie Milligan in October, 1849. p. 61[1] In his autobiography, edited by his son, William, he states:

I was married to Margaret Anne Wylie Milligan, at the house of her brother, McLeod, new New Alexandria, Westmoreland County, Penn. She was the only daughter of Rev. James Milligan, my father's friend in Vermont and afterwards in Illinois. The marriage was in all respects a happy one.
[1]

They were parents to William, b. 1851 [2]

Their only daughter, unnamed in his book, was born in 1853, and died "the following spring." (Note: presumably 1854)

In the winter of the same year, Margaret Sloane's health began to decline, and she died in October. (Note: year is unclear, but may be 1854 or 1855). He lovingly describes her in his book as "tall and dignified, very bashful when a girl, and never entirely free from the reserve which springs from that characteristic." p. 65.[1]

In 1858, he married Margaret McLaren. p. 95 [1] The children of James and Margaret were:

  • Donald (b. circa 1859)
  • Robert (d. in infancy)

Sadly, Margaret died of consumption in December of 1861. p. 96 [1]

He married next, in January of 1865, to Miss Frances 'Swanwick and they had five children.

James died in Allegheny City, Pennsylvania at his home on March 6, 1886.[3]

Note:
Allegheny City was annexed by the city of Pittsburgh in 1907.
