Spelling variations for the surname include Sloan and Sloane. There were also two men named Granville or Greenville Slone who lived in eastern Kentucky contemporaneously.

One resided in Floyd County, Kentucky. He was Granville Slone (called "Greenville" or "Green") born 1828 and married 1863 in Kanawha County, West Virginia to Elizabeth Douglas. [1] He died 1901 leaving a will in Floyd County, Kentucky. [2]

The other Granville Slone, resided in Kentucky and Ohio and died at the old soldiers home in Dayton, Ohio in 1903. This profile contains the known data gathered thus far about him.

Granville Sloane, is first listed on the tax list for Greenup County, Kentucky in 1847. His name appears next to Mitchell and Joab Sloane. Granville continues to be listed through 1855. [3]Later tax lists have not been examined.

Granville was living with Joab Slone in the 1860 US Census for Greenup County, Kentucky. [4]

He saw military service as a Private in the Union Army during the Civil War. His first service was for 3 months in Co C, 18th Regiment Ohio Infantry. [5]

He later enlisted in the 2nd West Virginia Cavalry, Co G, E. and subsequently received a pension for this service. [6]

In the 1870 US Census he and his brother George were both living in Jackson County, Ohio. Granville's household included a wife, Elizabeth, born about 1844, Ohio and a child William Hanes, age 5, born Ohio. Perhaps Elizabeth had been married before? [7]

In the 1900 census Granville was a widower, age 72, born Dec 1828, living with his brother George in Wayne Co., WV. [8]

Granville died at the Old Soldiers Home in Dayton, Ohio. Their records state Granville's next of kin was brother-in-law Calvin Johnson of Catlettsburg, KY. After Granville's death his personal effects were given to his brother George W. Sloan. The Soldiers Home records also show Granville's occupation in 1903 was Boatman on the Ohio River.[9] [10] [11]

Death date is from his burial in Dayton National Cemetery, Montgomery Co., Ohio. [12] Also see obituary, Dayton, Ohio. Feb18, 1903: Granville Sloan died February 14, age 78, at DVS, Co. G, 2nd W Va. Cav.[13]
