Mary Small was born and christened and died all on May 5, 1629, at St. Mary's Parish, Bideford, Devonshire, England. She was the daughter of Edward Small and his wife, Elizabeth (Shertt) Small. Mary's identity has been confused with her younger brother, Edmond / Edmund Small, who was christened on March 2, 1630, at St Mary's Anglican Parish, Bideford, England. Some have also confused St. Mary's Parish in England with that of St. Mary's in the English colony of Maryland (which was not founded until 1634), again in error.
So far as is known, little Mary Small, only lived a very short while and obviously had no spouse or children. She never saw the shores of Maryland. Her older brother, Francis Small, b: 1625, however, did emigrate from England to the English colony of Massachusetts Bay in New England, and was a pioneer in the part of that colony that was later to become the American state of Maine.
