Barbara Small was born to Joseph and Mercy (Godfrey) Small in Chatham, Barnstable County, Massachusetts, on 09 October 1776, calculated from her age at death.[1][2][3]

Barbara married three times, outliving all three husbands. Her first marriage was to the mariner Reuben Burgess of Harwich when she was 19. Their marriage was recorded in both Falmouth and Harwich, occuring on 29 March 1796, Rev. Henry Lincoln officiating. At the time of their marriage she was residing in Falmouth, and Reuben was of Harwich.[4][5] Reuben was lost at sea in 1808. Barbara was appointed guardian of their children.[6]

With Reuben she had (surname Burgess):[7]

  1. Aaron N., b. 1797
  2. Rebecca, b. 1800
  3. Barbara, b. 1801
  4. Ascenath, b. 1802
  5. Reuben, b. 1804
  6. Stephen, b. 1807

After Reuben's death, Barbara remained a widow for five years, then at age 36 she married a second time to William Phinney on 28 March 1813 in Falmouth.[8] William died in Falmouth on 04 Jan 1823.

With William she had (surname Phinney):[9]

  1. William, b. 1814
  2. Lucy H., b. 1817
  3. Adaline, b. 1818

Barbara probably lived with her son Reuben Burgess and her three Phinney children in Sidney, Kennebec, Maine, after her second husband died. She remained a widow for 14 years. Barbara then married at age 60 for the third time to John Sawtelle in Sidney on 16 Apr 1837.[10][11] John died in January 1850 in Sidney.

Barbara was then aged 73. She returned to Harwich, Massachusetts, and lived with her daughter Adaline (Phinney) Burgess until her death. Barbara died in Harwich on 29 May 1860, aged 83 years, 7 months and 20 days of rheumatism.[1]

Barbara Sawtell was buried in the Harwich Centre Cemetery where her gravestone still stands next to that of her daughter Ascenath (Burgess) (Burgess) Brooks.[12]
