Biography
John Ernest Small was born on 9th January 1870 in Ulmarra, New South Wales (Australia). He was the fourth and youngest son of George Small and Eliza Blanch. [1] He was a great grandson of First Fleet convicts, John Small (1761-1850) and Mary Parker (c1758-1824), Second Fleeter George Patfield (1763-1809), and 1793 convict arrival, Mary O'Brien (c1772-1853).
John married Emily Riordan on 2nd February 1905 in St Patrick's Roman Catholic Church, Tatham. [2] The Richmond River Express and Casino Kyogle Advertiser reported on the wedding in their edition of Tuesday 7th February: [3]

- "At St. Patrick's Church on Thursday morning last, Miss Emily Agatha, youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E. Riordan, of Rosebrook, Tatham, was united in the holy bonds of matrimony Mr. John Ernest Small, youngest son of Mr. G. Small, of Lawrence. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. Father Walsh ..."
The couple had two sons, the older of whom died in infancy, however, John passed away in late 1907 / early 1908 in Sydney, New South Wales. [4]
