Biography

Richmond Hunter Small was born on 21st January 1890 in Tyndale near Maclean, on New South Wales' Clarence River (Australia). He was the fifth son and youngest child of Henry Small and Sarah Hough. [1] He appears to have been named for two of New South Wales' primary rivers, on which his Small family forebears had worked as timber cutters and farmers. He was a great grandson of First Fleet convicts, John Small (1761-1850) and Mary Parker (c1758-1824), Second Fleeter George Patfield (1763-1809), and 1793 convict arrival, Mary O'Brien (c1772-1853).

Richmond and Esme Small

Richmond married eighteen year-old, Esme Idriess, in 1917 in Grafton, New South Wales. [2] Esme was a younger sister of noted Australian author, Ion Idriess. The marriage ended in divorce before 1943. Richmond and Esme had two children:

Richmond owned land with his brother Henry, in Cangai via Grafton. [3]

Aged 62 years, he passed away on 2nd July 1952 in Chatswood, New South Wales. [4]
