Biography

William may have been born at Cranbrook. His marriage record at Bethersden parish church describes him as 'of Biddenden'. His burial record refers to him as a victualler, but his Will dated 20 March 1708 (=1709) calls him 'William Small senior husbandman of Halden, very sick and weak of body but of perfect mind and memory'. William and his wife produced eight known sons, two of whom (at least) died in infancy, and they had two daughters. The only persons mentioned by name in his Will were the first two surviving sons, William and Richard, his daughter Elizabeth and son in law Thomas Tilden, his grand-daughter Elizabeth Tilden (to whom he left a lamb) and his wife, Cecilia. He also refers to her (and his) five lesser children.
