State of Maine 1820 to present [ As we say in Maine "State O' Maine"]

The coastal areas of eastern Maine first became the Province of Maine in a 1622 land patent. The part of western Maine north of the Kennebec River was more sparsely settled, and was known in the 17th century as the Territory of Sagadahock.

The province was incorporated into the Massachusetts Bay Colony during the 1650s, beginning with the formation of York County, Massachusetts, which extend from the Piscataqua River to just east of the mouth of the Presumpscot River in Casco Bay. Eventually, its territory grew to encompass nearly all of present-day Maine. The large size of the county led to its division in 1760 through the creation of Cumberland and Lincoln counties.

The District of Maine was the governmental designation for what is now the U.S. state of Maine from October 25, 1780 to March 15, 1820, when it was admitted to the Union as the 23rd state.

Hi Adrian,

I'm with the Data Doctors. We are volunteers who help make sure that WikiTree data is as accurate as possible. This profile came up because the birth location comes up as "USA," but we weren't a country yet. I went to corrected it and saw that Abigail was born in Dear Isle, Massachusetts and died in Dear Isle, Maine. Is this correct or are they both supposed to be Massachusetts or Maine?

It seemed like something I should leave for you to sort out.

:)
