In 'Darwen and its people' by J.G. Shaw, p.33 and 34: "Richard [Smalley] ("Young Parson Smalley") was born in 1760 .. He died in June 1800 aged 40, leaving two sons - Richard Kershaw Smalley and Robert Kershaw Smalley, the former born in 1795, the latter in 1797. They died in 1839 and 1841 respectively, one at Astley Bank, Darwen and the other in Liverpool."
In 'Darwen and its people' by J.G. Shaw, p. 34 and 35. "He [Richard Smalley] was elected Minister of Lower Chapel on his father's death in 1791, but a large section of the congregation were strongly opposed to his election, and a secession took place which resulted in the building of Pole Lane Chapel, opened on the 6th of May 1793. Richard was only a minister for a little over twelve months. My father used to say that he was a rollicking young gentleman, educated for the ministry, but not fitted in any way for his calling."
