Joseph Thomas Smallwood owned a farm on which part of the city of London, England is now built. He was a barber, and was at a dance hall, where he got into a fight and cut a man. Fearing that he might die, he climbed from an upstairs window, grabbed his two sons, Jesse and Hezakiah, and stowed away on a cargo boat, working as an apprentice. He came to America in 1789 landing in New Orleans.
