Biography
Eliza (Smally) Burgoyne was a convict after the Third Fleet transported to Van Dieman's Land
Eliza was born about 1833.
Eliza was transported to Van Diemens Land
She is described as 5 foot 1 inch in height with a fair complexion, sandy hair and hazel eyes. Prior to conviction, she was employed as a housemaid. She was convicted at the Lincoln Assizes on 5 March 1851 and sentenced to 15 years. [1]She arrived in Van Diemens Land aboard the Anna Maria which departed London on 7 October 1851 arriving in Hobart on 26 January 1852.[2]
After arrival in Hobart, her conduct record shows she absconded regularly and was punished with sentences of hard labour. It is difficult to decipher some of her conduct report and assignments due to the age of the original document but it appears she spent some time at Sandy Bay which is now a suburb of Hobart.[3]
Eliza (servant) married Charles Burgoyne (shoemaker) on 6 February 1860 at the Church of St Joseph, Hobart. [4][5]
Eliza died in July 1908 and was buried on 29 July 1908 in a paupers grave at Cornelian Bay Cemetery. Her last known residence was New Town Charitable Institution, New Town.[6]
