Biography

Judith Smead, the daughter of William Smead and Elizabeth Lawrence, was born in Northampton, Massachusetts, on February 18, 1665. On April 30, 1689, she married, in Deerfield, Massachusetts, Eleazer Hawks, son of John Hawks. The first marriage recorded in the town register. [1] [2] [3] [4]

  1. Elizabeth, born February 26, 1690; died January 1, 1691.[3]
  2. Thankful, born February 26, 1690; married 1st, August 31, 1715, Thomas Taylor, drowned at Northfield, 1717, 2nd, 1718, Daniel Ashley of Westfield, 3rd, March 6, 1729, Capt. William Symes of Keene.[3][2]
  3. Elizabeth, 2nd, born January 26, 1692; died August 11, 1693.[3]
  4. Eleazer, born December 26, 1693; married, November 24, 1714, Abigail Wells; died May 14, 1774.[3]
  5. Mary, born December 2, 1695; married, July 30, 1712, Jonathan Patterson of Northfield.[3][2]
  6. Elizabeth, 3rd, born November 1, 1697; married, July 12, 1717, Hezekiah Stratton of Northfield.[3]
  7. Nathaniel, born October 9, 1699; died 1754.[3][2]
  8. Sarah, born July 26, 1701; married, November 22, 1726, Thomas Wells.[3]
  9. Hannah, born July 7, 1703; married, November 3, 1727, Samuel Allen; died 1771.[3][2]
  10. John, born December 5, 1707; died 1784.[3][2]

Judith (Smead) Hawks died in Deerfield on January 27, 1719, at the age of 53. She was buried in the Old Deerfield Burying Ground In Deerfield, Massachusetts. [2] [3]

Research Notes

  • Death Year: Her gravestone (Find A Grave) reads that she died in 1718,[2] however "Sheldon" cites the year as "1718-19",[3] which implies that 1719 is the "new style" year.
