Aaron Burr Smee was born on 15 July 1875 in Three Oaks, Berrien, Michigan.[1] He was the son of of Jacob M. Smee and Martha (Jones) Smee.[2][3] He used his middle name day-to-day.
In 1880, Aaron (age 4) was living with his parents, Jacob (age 46) and Martha (age 42) in Three Oaks, Berrien, Michigan. The household also included his five siblings:[2]
By 1907, Burr and Katherine were making their home in Elkhart, Elkhart, Indiana,[5]
In 1910, Burr (age 34) and Katherine (age 27) were living in Elkhart, Ward 4, with their children Mildred (age 4) and Dale (age 2). His occupation was listed as brakeman on the railroad.[6] The 1910 City Directory of Elkhart, listed the Smee home at 323 State Street.[7]
At the end of 1916, Burr was injured during a train derailment in Kalamazoo, Michigan. He was hospitalized there for about four weeks. The local paper reported that he was injured when the engine left the tracks near the Harrison Street crossing. At that time, he was a freight conductor on the New York Central train that had traveled from Elkhart. By 20 January 1917, he was able to return to his home in Elkhart.[8]
In 1917, Burr registered for the draft for World War I in Elkhart County. By that time, the family was living at 1400 Benham in Elkhart. His appearance was described as short, of medium build, with grey hair and grey eyes.[10]
Late in 1923, he was admitted to Elkhart General hospital for surgery for abdominal pains thought to have stemmed from his earlier accident, but the surgery could not be completed. He was released to his home on Christmas Day, 1923. The family was living at 1709 Frances Ave., Elkhart.[3]
Burr passed away at home on 26 January 1924, in Elkhart, at the age of 49. His funeral was held at the Castle United Brethren Church in Elkhart, where he was a member.[3][11]

His body was placed in the mausoleum at Rice Cemetery in Elkhart, until it could be taken to Michigan for burial.[3]
He was buried at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Three Oaks.[12]
