FUNERAL NOTICES.
The relatives and friends of the late MR. SYDNEY HERBERT SMIDT, of Ryan street, South Grafton, are invited to attend his funeral to move from St. Matthew's Church at 3.30 o'clock THIS AFTERNOON, for the South Grafton cemetery.

OBITUARY
MR. S. H. SMIDT.
The death occurred suddenly yesterday afternoon at the residence of his daughter. (Mrs. E Turner, Ryan street, South Grafton), of Mr. Sydney Herbert Smidt. Deceased, who was 65 years of age, came to South Grafton when an infant and had resided there ever since. In his early life, the late Mr Smidt was a keen sportsman. He played football with the old Albion learn for many seasons and was a noted footrunner, having won numerous gaslight handicaps when these races were conducted where the Saraton Theatre now stands. Later in life he was a keen follower of the sport of kings, owning many horses, including a well-known performer named Keff. He built training stables opposite McKittrick Park. These were conducted by the popular trainer, Mr. S. McLellan, for many years. Deceased was an apprentice to Mr. H. Reimer, who conducted the original bakery in South Grafton. Later he established the second bakery, in Ryan street. South Grafton, which he successfully carried on for many years. He owned the first motor car to be used as a taxi in South Grafton. This car was hired by the Professional and business men for country trips and was the first vehicle to travel many of the by roads of the district which are main roads to-day, including the Woolgoolga and Ramornie-Cangai roads in the days when copper mines and meatworks were in full production. Deceased is survived by four sons and three daughters, the sons being William, of South Grafton; Mervyn, of Dorrigo Sydney, of South Grafton, and Clifford, A.I.F.. and daughters. Mrs. L. Chaseling and Mrs E Turner, both of South. Grafton and Mrs. J. Ward, of Braunstone. His wife predeceased him thirty years ago .The funeral will leave St. Matthew's Church, South Grafton, after service at 3.30 p.m., for the South Grafton Cemetery.
