DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Maartin by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA.
However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line.
It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Maartin:
Will all researchers please note - some documents particularly baptism records list Maarten and his siblings as Smit and or Smith, what has happened, some researchers have inadvertenly duplicated entries using Smit or Smith as the family name.
I am currently trying to resolve an issue with [Smit-5796] and [Smith-77292] married to J H Hellberg, her first names are Anna Catharina who was baptised 16 April 1758. By coincidence one of the witnesses at the baptism was another Anna Catharina Smith and David van der Merwe the mothers brother. Then to complicate matters there is another Anna Catharina Smit [Smit-5796] with the same baptism date who married a Jansen. I contacted her profile manager but they too are at a loss concerning the correct identification.
Concerning the mixing and use of both family names I am of the opinion that we should follow the example used by the Cape of Good Hope Project WikiTree for [Smidt-148] where the use of aka Smith is used. Note to add to the confusion his father is [Smit-35] he become [Smidt-148] his son becomes [Smit-70] his daughter Anna Cathariana becomes [Smith-257636]
I would be delighted if a member of the GOCH could give guidance with the use of a family name and an aka and help resolve who these Anna Catharina's married.
Hi Paul. With regards to family names, we use the following principles :
- LNAB (Last Name at Birth/Baptism) is the family name used on the Baptism record
- Current Last Name is their latest married surname (in the case of a female), otherwise it could be the family name used on other records such as Marriage Register etc.
- Other Last Name(s) / Aka - could be other spellings of the surname or other married names (where there is more than 1 marriage)
E.g: If child baptised as "Smith" but uses "Smit" on marriage record etc, then LNAB = "Smith" and Current Last Name = "Smit". If a female and she married a Bester, then LNAB = "Smith", Current Last Name = "Bester" and Other Last Name(s)/Aka = "Smit"
Smit-2251 and Smit-70 appear to represent the same person because: Same data. According to De Villiers, Christoffel Coetzee "Oude Kaapsche Familien" https://archive.org/details/OudeKaapscheFamilienPart3 - P to Z. Page No. 286 there was only one son named Marten. It also indicates that he had a daughter named Adriana Jacomina - baptised 2 Oct 1785.

Trust that makes sense.
