The clearest claim that the father of Richard Smith, settler at what is now Bristol, Rhode Island, was the son of a man named Richard Smith comes from a contribution by "A. L. W." to the genealogy pages of the Boston Evening Transcript on 27 May 1903.^[1] That person included various statements about many unrelated Smiths who lived in Colonial America. Regarding Richard Smith, he or she wrote:

Richard Smith was in business in London in 1664; he lost all of his property in the Great Fire, Sept. 2, 1666. Sailed from London in ship Blessing, June 8, 1673, arrived in Boston Aug. 19, 1673, and in Bristol, R.I., Nov. 9, 1680.
