Leonard was born in 1897. Leonard Smith is listed on the 1900 Census in his parent's (William John Smith and Clara (High) Smith) household in McLennan, Texas with two siblings (Vera and Ottie). [1] He is also listed with his parents on the 1910 Census in the same location with three more siblings (William Verral, Sayde Florence, and Robert Chester). [2]
His United States World War I Draft Registration Card in 1917 verifies that he was born in Gladstone, Texas and describes him as being of medium height and build; with "grey" eyes and "redish" hair. [3] He was inducted into the army in Waco, Texas on September 18, 1918 and was discharged and/or transferred on December 8, 1918 to the Student Army Training Center University of Texas in Austin, Texas. [4] He married Jimmie D. Smith (the record and find a grave indicates her maiden name was Smith) on March 5, 1925 in Henderson, Texas. [5] They are listed together on the 1930 Census in San Angelo, Tom Green, Texas. [6] He passed away, widowed at the age of 34 in December of 1931 in San Angelo, Tom Green, Texas.[7]
