Biography

Oslo University Hospital.

Otto was born on 13th May 1871 in the Oslo University Hospital HF, located in Rikshospitalet and Kvinneklinikken, Oslo, Norway was the illegitimate son of Otto Kristen Smith, A ship's captain,[1] later, a Merchant in Norway, his mother, Elen Bergette Larson was an unmarried Servant in Oslo. Otto was baptised on 14 July 1871 in Rikshospitalet og Kvinneklinikken, Oslo,[2]

He was fostered by Nils and Ragnild Gundersen, with whom Elan worked, before and after they arrived in New Zealand, in 1876, Otto used his foster parent's name until the early 1890s but from at least 1892 he reverted back to his natural father's name, of Smith.

Otto aged 4 and his foster parents; Niels (42) and Ragenhold (44) Gundersen, must have travelled from Oslo, Norway to Hamburg, Germany about 1876, as they departed from Hamburg on 12 April 1876 aboard the Fritz Reuter. the ship was full of over 500 Polish immigrants, most of whom thought they would be travelling to the United States. [3], They arrived in Wellington, New Zealand on August 4, 1876, A long drawn out voyage of 110 days saw 11 deaths on board including four children and six babies less than 12 months old.[4]

On 13th July 1893 in Palmerston North, Manawatu, New Zealand, Otto married Agnes Clark, together they had 13 children, eight boys, and five girls

In 1916 Otto Smith sold his 400 acres of farm to Mr James Temperly and bought a Hotel

Otto died on 28 May 1945 in Waikanae, Kapiti Coast, New Zealand[5]
