Old Soldier Answers Final Call
On last Saturday night, J. P. Smith of this city, a defender of the Southland inthe sixties, when our nation was torn with strife, closed his eyes in that last sleep and his worn body was freed from pain. This old soldier had long been a sufferer having been confined to his home for several years and to his bed for months suffering from that terrible and dreaded disease cancer.
J. P. Smith was born in Alabama Nov. 10th 1844, and was in his 88th year when the final summons came. Mr. Smith enlisted in the Southern army at the age of 16 years in 1862. He was married twice, was the father of 12 children, 10 of whom are living, and all at his bedside when the end came. They are Charlie Smith of Caddo, Ellis and Earl of Durant, Will of Duncan, Mrs. Nettie Franklin of Earlsboro, Mrs. Ida Revers of Sulphur, all by his first marriage, and Harold, Curtis, Earnest and J.P., Jr. Besides these he leaves 19 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren and his wife and other relatives and friends to mourn his passing.
The funeral was conducted in Caddo Saturday afternoon with the Rev. Lee Smith of the Baptist Church in charge. Then the body was carried to Pleasant Hill cemetery in Caddo Hills and then laid to rest to await the resurrection morn.[14]
