Biography

Ralph Smith, son of Jonathan Smith and Ruth (Hunting) Smith, was born on 18 Oct. 1748 at Needham, Massachusetts.[1]

He married Mary Whittemore[2] on 12 Dec. 1771 at Roxbury.[3] Mary, wife of Ralph, died in Roxbury 8 Oct 1777.[3]

He married Sarah Ruggles,[2] daughter of Joseph Ruggles and Rebecca Curtis, on 25 Nov. 1779 at West Roxbury, Massachusetts.[4][5][3] Sarah, wife of Ralph, died in Roxbury 23 Dec 1799.[3]

Ralph Smith served as a Private with Lt James Morton in Massachusetts during the American Revolution. He also ferried supplies out of New York as he was licensed by the New York Council of Safety. [6]

Ralph Smith is a DAR Patriot Ancestor, A106686.

On 10 May 1804 he purchased, for $300.00, Pew No. 24, Lower Floor, of the First Church in Roxbury, Massachusetts. He was a manufacturer of soap and candles. He was a member of a company commanded by Watson Gore at Nantasket in the War of 1812, and attached to the commissary Department until his death. [2]

He married Mrs. Susannah Richardson Howe[2] on 27 Nov. 1804 at Roxbury. Town records have her as "Mrs. Susanna Howe"[3] [Widow of James Howe. See Research Notes.]

Ralph died on 12 Aug. 1812, age 65 years, at Roxbury, Massachusetts.[2][3]

Susannah Smith, widow, died 8 Dec 1846, age 90 y. 7 m.[3]

Research Notes

Mrs. Susannah Richardson Howe: Her first marriage is not in the Roxbury records. However a James Howe died in Roxbury 12 Jan 1798, a 50 y, and a James Howe, s of James and Susannah, died in Roxbury 23 Jun 1801, a 24 y.[3]
