James was born in 1800. She was the son of Thomas Smith and Sarah Young.
He married Elizabeth Fletcher on 22 July 1819 in St Nicholas Plumstead Woolwich, Kent, England.
They had 4 children.
In 1847 he and his wife Elizabeth, along with their four children, emigrated from England to New Zealand, travelling on the Ship Ann.
James was with the New Zealand Fencibles, Royal Marines.[1]
He passed away in 1873 at the age of about 73.
