Biography

Jane was born about 1578, the daughter of Henry Smith of Pepper Harrow and Jane, daughter of Richard Covert Esq, of Slaugham and sister of Sir Walter Covert Kt of Slaugham, Sussex.^[1][2][3] She was married, firstly, to Ninian Burrell of Holmsted. They had at least five sons and six daughters.^[4]She was married secondly to Peter Courthope of Danny.^[4]

She was buried on 26 Sep 1655.^[4][2] The memorial brass for her first husband in Holy Trinity Church, Cuckfield, Sussex, gives her age at death as 77, and names her father as Henry Smith, Gent., her husbands as Ninian Burrell and Peter Courthorpe of Danny, Hustpierpoint, and her children by her first marriage as sons Walter, Ninian, Alexander, Thomas and John, and daughters "Timothie", Jane, Anne, Dorothy, Elizabeth and Judith.^[5]
