They had at least 2 sons, born in 1865 and 1867. No later information has been found except his burial at Duns New Cemetery with the following inscription:
ERECTED BY JOHN SMITH TENANT PUTTON MILL IN MEMORY OF MARGARET TURNER NEWTON HIS WIFE WHO DIED 2nd MARCH 1867 AGED 23 YEARS ALSO HENRY NEWTON, HIS SON WHO DIED 7th APRIL 1867,AGED 10 WEEKS ALSO THE SAID JOHN SMITH WHO DIED 4th SEPTEMBER 1896,AGED 59 YEARS.
