Biography

EVAN F. SMITH FUNERAL HELD HERE TUESDAY

Funeral services were held Tuesday at noon in the Vernal First Ward Chapel for Evan Fowles Smith, 71, who died at his home Saturday at 7:00 a.m. of a heart ailment.

Mr. Smith was born March 2, 1895, in Georgetown, Idaho, a son of Eunice Elizabeth Fuller and Francis Harper Smith. He married Sarah McKee February 1, 1919 in Duchesne. The marriage was solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple June 11, 1919.

He was reared in Vernal and received his education in the elementary and high school here.

Following marriage, the couple spent three years on a farm in Roosevelt. They then moved to Kenilworth where he was employed by the Independent Coal and Coke Company as an electrical mechanic for forty years. He was retired in April of 1960 and they moved to Vernal where they have resided since.

Mr. Smith was an active member of the LDS Churchand served in many capacities, including Bishop's Counselor for a number of years, Sunday School Superintendent for 10 years, President of Elders Quorum for two years. President Kenilworth Branch for four years and High Councilman in North Carbon Stake for 12 years.

Since moving to Vernal, he has been a counselor in the High Priest Quorum of Ashley Stake and was secretary of the Ashley Stake High Priest Quorum at the time of his death. He was president of the Welfare Association for a number of years.

Survivors include his widow, one son, Rowe McKee of Vernal; daughters, Mrs. Floyd (Donna) Erickson, Englewood, Colorado and Mrs. James (Eunice) F. Butlin, Glendale, California; five grandchildren and the following brothers and sisters: Nellie Smith, Mrs. George (Annie) Johnstun, Mrs. Leon (Mazie) P. Christensen, Mrs. Harvey (Lola) Christensen, Mrs. Iowa (Lucy) Hacking and Ray M. Smith, all of Vernal; Mrs. Delos (Eunice) Watkins, Lehi and Shirley P. Smith, Sonoma, California.

Funeral services were conducted by the Vernal Sixth Ward Bishopric. Burial was in the Maeser Fairview Cemetery under the direction of the Vernal Mortuary.

Prayer at the mortuary was by Ray McKee, a brother-in-law. Prelude and postlude music was played by Mable Stagg.

A song, "Hold Thou My Hand", was sung by Glade and Elizabeth Sowards, followed by the prayer by Martin Curtis. Speakers were Bishop Garth Batty and President Lamond Tullis.

Mr. and Mrs. Sowards sang "Beyond the Sunset" narrated by Mrs. Jack R. Wallis and Morgan Merkley gave the closing prayer.

Pallbearers were Harvey Christensen, Harold McKee, Harvey McKee, George Johnstun, Iowa Hacking and Delos Watkins, brothers-in-law of Mr. Evans.

The grave was dedicated by Clarence Palmer, brother-in-law.
