Alexander Dunn Smith was born 3 Oct 1823, to Francis Smith, a weaver in Barrachan, and Agnes Young.[1]
On 6 June 1841 Alexander (age 17) was living at Auchengellie Farm, Mochrum, Wigtownshire, Scotland, working as a farm servant to James Mair.[2]

When Alexander was 20, on 4 December 1843, he married Ellen / Helen Turner . He was a farm servant in Cornhulloch, and she was from the Parish of Glasserton.[4]
In the 1851 census Alexander (age 27) was living at 99 Camphill Street, Riccarton, Ayrshire, Scotland. He was a labourer, and living with Helen and sons Robert (6 years) and James (4 years).[5]
When Alexander was 29, on 26 Feb 1853, he emigrated aboard the "Agricola" with wife Helen and sons, Robert, James and Alexander Turner Smith.[6]

On 3 December 1853 Alexander (age 30) was employed in Ipswich, New South Wales, Australia. carpenter and labourer.[8]
