In 1820, John Smith was still residing with his mother Catherine in Stoner, Bourbon, Kentucky. His half sister Catherine Rymel had been married two years previous while his only true brother had died young. That year he married Nancy Grant also of Bourbon. They had nine children before Nancy's death.
John like his mother married two more times as a widower. First to Miss Pedee Pierce, who he had no children with. Lastly, Miss Sarah N. Bosworth, of whom only one of their children survived.
