Mervyn Smith was born on 9 January 1923 in Geraldton, Western Australia.^[1] He is the son of Sidney Smith and Louisa Roberts.^[2]

Mervyn moved to Perth on 21st May 1940 by train to commence work. The following announcement was in the Geraldton Guardian and Express on 20th May that year.:

SOCIAL AND PERSONAL

Mr. Mervyn Smith, youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. S. S. Smith, of Shenton Street, is leaving by to-night's train for Perth, where he has obtained a position.^[3]

Mervyn Smith married Betty Lesley Hewins on 23 April 1949. They had 3 children; Geoffrey, Jennifer and Robyn.

Mervyn died on 3 September 2011 in Perth, Western Australia. He was cremated at Karrakatta Cemetery on 9 September 2011 and his ashes spread on the rose garden.^[4]
