Harry Smith was born in Whittlesey, Cambridgeshire on June 28, 1787. His father was a surgeon.
He began his military career on May 8, 1805 and was promoted to Lieutenant on August 15 of that same year.
In 1812 he was promoted to Captain. That same year he met Juana Maria de Los Dolores de León, an orphaned Spanish noble, and married her.
In 1814 he volunteered for service in the United States and witnessed the burning of the capitol at Washington. He was a brigade major at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815.
By 1826 Harry was promoted to the rank of Major. During service in South Africa, he was promoted to Lieutenant-colonel.
In 1840 he was appointed Adjutant-General in India and he was appointed a Knight Commander of the Order of Bath (KCB) for his role in the Gwalior campaign of 1843.
Harry died on October 12, 1860 at his home of Eton Place in London. He was buried in his home town of Whittlesey. He is commemorated there in the Church of St Mary with a marble bust and memorial. The local community college, Sir Harry Smith Community College, is named after him.
