Biography

Elizabeth (known as Libby) was the 4th of 13 children born to Amos & Elizabeth (Nixon) Smith. In the 1880 US census, Elizabeth Smith is shown living with her parents at age 19 and working as a housekeeper. Her brother Charles' obituary from 1919 lists her as Mrs Elizabeth Taylor and living in Corning. That information was critical to finding additional records and clues to her life.

She married John H. Taylor in 1881 and had 2 children before being widowed in 1887. As a widow, Elizabeth and her two children were likely staying with family members for periods of time. Still looking for records between 1887 and 1920.

1920 census has Elizabeth Taylor living with her son Lewis' family in Corning. She was working as a dishwasher at the Corning Glass Works. Many of her brothers worked at the glass factory between 1900 and 1950. In the 1930 census, she is Libby Taylor, still employed at the glass factory and living with her daughter's family about a block from her brother Austin.

Libby Taylor passed away in 1935 and is buried at Hope Cemetery in Corning.
