Harriett (Hattie) is the 12th child of Amos and Elizabeth Smith. In 1900, she was living with her brother Austin Smith's family in Corning, New York and looking for work as a dressmaker.
She married Clay Bennett in 1905 and had at least one child. 1910 Census shows them living with his parents.

MRS. HATTIE BENNETT Mrs. Hattie J. Bennett, 87, of Bluff Point died Wednesday, Sept. 26, 1962, in the home of her daughter, Mrs. Kenneth Coons of the Town of Jerusalem. A lifetime resident of the Bluff Point area, she was a daughter of Amos Avery Smith and Elizabeth White Smith, and was the widow of Clay Bennett. She was a registered practical nurse and a member of Bluff Point Methodist Church. Besides her daughter, she leaves a granddaughter, Mrs.
. Harold Baley of Phelps; a grand- of Coudersport, Pa.; a son, Lauson, Robert E. Coons of Penn Yan, RD, and eight great great grandchildren. j * Friends called at the Thayer Funeral Chapel, where a service was held at 2 p. m. Friday. Rev. Charles Banks, pastor of Bluff Point Methodist Church, officiated. Burial was in Lake View Cemetery.
