John Nichols Smith was born on 30 Aug 1817 in Jefferson City, Jefferson County, Ohio to John I Smith and Edith (Spencer) Smith. He was the second born child of seven (William John, John Nichols, Mary Jane, Samuel, Sarah Jane, Edith Jane, Matilda).

Tax rolls for Jefferson County, Ohio in 1816 show a John Smith as being a resident of that county. This would be John Nichols Smith's father John I Smith.


He passed away on 18 Apr 1871 in De Witt, Clinton, Iowa from Lung Fever (Pneumonia). John was 54 years old. He was buried in De Witt, Clinton County, Iowa.
