Mary Ann Cruzan Book, The Cruzan Story 200 years in America, A History and Genealogy of Benjamin Cruzan, Revolutionary War Veteran and his Descendents

4- Benjamin Franklin Cruzan - b jan 29 1849 d. 1911, Now Charles Chart, my first acquaintance with this Cruzan, had him listed as a son of Israel Ross, instead of John Wesley. Israel did have a son, Benjamin, but not this particular one. Edith Lists him, but give no details other than the above birth date. However, I was fortunate to get to know a granddaughter of his, Bonnie Cruzan Lewelyn, who lives her in Joplin, and so was able to begin to gather much material on him. First. all, Bonnie alerted me to the fact that he was buried in the old part of Carterville Cemetery. I certainly hadn't known this, but sure enough , there I found his tombstone; "Benjamin F. Cruzan 1849-1911." At Lamar, Missouri I found his marriage record: "Benjamin F. Cruzan to Mary J. smith, Oct 30, 1869. " (I have written more about this couple in the Chaptert " to the Ozark" part 1 of this book) Bonnie agrees that Charlies's chart had them listed in the wrong place. "Now Uncle Harvey, your grandfather was my grandfathers brother - Benjamin Franklin - I'm positive (Charlie agreed that he had made a mistake.) My grandmother, Mary Smith Cruzan .... she alway talked about being an Indian. Her brothers were great big Old guy, and they always seemed like they walked kind of pigeon -toed. So I was under the impression we were part Indian." (I read in one book about Indians, that they did walk toes turned inward, and thought the white man walked funny with their toes pointed more outward. I mentioned Benjamin Franklin's tombstone. Bonnie said, "Aunt Hattie, I think, had the stone put on his grave a long time after his death." she said they call Benjamin Franklin "Frank". In 1984 I found this newspaper article from the Joplin News Herald of Wednesday June 7, 1911 " Benjamin F. Cruzan 64, years old, and for many years a resident of Prosperity, died at his home yesterday afternoon following an illness of five months of stomach trouble. Mr Cruzan is survived by his widow and six children . Mrs. A.E. Hess of Carterville, Joseph Cruzan ofColorado, Frank Cruzan and Florence Cruzan are four of the children. Funeral services will be held at 2 O'clock Thursday afternoon and burial will be mad in the Carterville cemetery" Here is what I've been able to gather from various sources, including Michael Blankenship. This Benjamin fF. was his great great grandfather. 5. Joseph 5.Effie Cruzan 5.Hattie Cruzan 5. Minnie Cruzan 5. Goldie Cruzan 5. Clara Cruzan 5. Frank Cruzan. (Benj F.) 5. Florence Cruzan

Bonnie lists the gifs as Effie, the oldest, the Hattie, Minnie, Clara, Florence Now let me break it down further.

Benjamin was born in 1845. He was the son of John Cruzan and Matida Henderson. He passed away in 1911. [1]

I don't think this death date is right as I see the when Benjamin died in 6/7/1911, he left a widow. Also they lives in Missouri.
