Biography

Marena Ann Smith Michael's "obituary of herself" (Oregon Journal, 24 May 1913): "During the following winter [i.e., 1853-54, after the fatherless family arrived in Oregon], my older sister was married to William Payne; it was he who had furnished us a home during our first winter in Oregon.
