Biography

Margaret "Maggie" Smith was the daughter of Isaac H. "Ike" Smith, her mother is unknown to me. Ike Smith's grandchildren could not remember the name of Maggie's mother. They knew she was Ike's first wife, she died young, then about 1877 Ike Smith married his second wife, Martha Elizabeth Vick.

According to the 1900 census William Frank Burkhalter and Margaret "Maggie" Smith were united in marriage in 1882, probably Kemper County Ms., the court house burnt, marriage record has not been located.

The photo was made of an oil painting of William F. Burkhalter and Margaret "Maggie" (Smith) Burkhalter, the portrait was in the possession of their grandson Walter Ward Roberts. William and Margaret's names were written on the back of the portrait in an old hand writing.

Children: 1. Mary Elizabeth Burkhalter (1885-1943) married Charlie Bethel Roberts 2. Lexie Burkhalter (1886-____) married George W. Johnson 3. William Sylvester "Vester" Burkhalter (1898-1946) Never Married.

In 1900 Billy and Maggie were enumerated on the Kemper County Ms. census next door to his father-in-law Ike Smith, listed as William Buckhalter age 40; Maggie Buckhalter wife age 36; Lizzie Buckhalter daughter age 16; Lottie Buckhalter daughter age 14; and Vester Buckhalter son age 3.

Billy and Maggie were located on the 1910 Lauderdale County Mississippi census next door to their daughter Lexie & her spouse George Johnson, listed as William Burkhalter age 50; Maggie Burkhalter wife age 45; William S. Burkhalter son age 12.
