Biography

Nathaniel Smith, son of Ebenezer and Sarah Smith.[1] M. Mercy on 14 Dec 1727.

Excerpt from Family Register of the Descendants of Nathaniel Smith, Jr.:[2]

...Nathaniel Smith Sr. (Grandfather of Judge Pliny of Orwell,) was born as recorded at Suffield 3 Mar 1702. He md. Mercy Smith December 14th, 1727, and died at Suffield about 1776.

The records of the old church in Suffield show that both he and Mercy, his future wife, were admitted to membership before marriage; and it appears by comparing church records of Baptisms with the town records of Births, that not over three days were suffered to elapse between the birth and baptism of their children. He was a man of good character, moderate abilities, in comfortable circumstances, but not affluent. She was a woman of uncommon strength of mind, with an education much beyond what was customary for females of that age. She was also distinguished for the depth of her piety, and for her extreme conscientiousness.

They had seven children, viz.:

  1. Nathaniel, (Jr.) b. 22 May 1729
  2. Mercy, b. 25 Dec 1731
  3. Rhoda, b. 1733
  4. Jonah, b. 1735
  5. Enoch, b. 1736
  6. Polly, b. 1738
  7. Sarah, b. 1740
  • Mercy md. John Lord. They left an only son, who settled in Monkton, Vt., where they raised a family, all now removed west, I believe.
  • Rhoda md. John Smith. They settled at New Milford, Conn., but afterwards removed to Pennsylvania, where they left children and grand-children.
  • Jonah died in New Hampshire, having considerable posteriority in Vermont and New York.
  • Enoch removed to Vermont and settled at Rupert, where he died about 1801, leaving two sons, Enoch and Thaddeus; Enoch went back to Suffield, where he settled and lived until he died, 20th August, 1831, leaving posteriority who still reside there. Thaddeus remains in Rupert has a numerous family.
  • Polly md. Levi Trumbull 20th May, 1756. They removed to Vermont, where they left a number of descendants now mostly gone west.
  • Sarah md. a Mr. Huddleston but left no child.

Smith-10340 and Smith-7240 appear to represent the same person because: they seem to have similar birth & death information. Please compare and merge Smith-10340 into Smith-7240 if you agree they are two profiles for the same person. Thank you. Kitty Cooper-1 Smith
