MEMORIAL PHOTOS 0 FLOWERS 0 Obituary from the Edwardsville Intelligencer (Edwardsville, Madison County, Illinois), Tuesday, November 20, 1945: William John Smith, aged 78, of 417 N. Buchanan street, died this morning at 5:45 o'clock in the Alton Memorial Hospital from complications resulting from a recent fall at his home. He was born in Pin Oak township May 2, 1867, to the late Rudolph and Elizabeth [Cook] Smith. On Oct. 2, 1890, he was married in the Eden Evangelical church by Rev. Kunzmann to Miss Emma Schomber of Pin Oak, who survives. The deceased was a cabinet maker for 50 years, and was employed at the Mechanic's Planing Mill, Inc., for many years. He was a former alderman and city treasurer of Edwardsville. He is affiliated with the Knights of Pythias, Modern Woodmen, Oddfellows, and Carpenter Local Union No. 378 of Edwardsville. He was also a member of the First Presbyterian church. Besides his wife he leaves two daughters, Mrs. Don Sager of Belleville, and Mrs. E.J. Ballweg of Edwardsville; one sister, Mrs. Wesley Smith of Marine, and four grandchildren. One son, two daughters, two brothers and two sisters preceded him in death. Friends may call after 12 o'clock Wednesday at the Lesley Marks Funeral home. The body will be taken to the First Presbyterian church at noon Thursday for services at 2:30 p.m. Rev. H.J. Bredehoeft will have charge of the services. Burial will be in the Woodlawn cemetery.
