MORTON - David R. Smith, 63, of Morton passed away at 9:25 a.m. Friday, Jan. 1, 2016, at UnityPoint-Health Methodist in Peoria.
He was born Jan. 3, 1952, in Peoria to Harry and Cathryn (Campbell) Smith. He married Karen Clemmer on Sept. 8, 1973, in Peoria.
Surviving are his wife, Karen Smith of Morton; one son, Jereme (Sarah) Smith of Prospect Heights, Ill.; one daughter, Jessica (Ryan) Zilm of Washington; six grandchildren, Blake, Keagan, Jayden, London, Kelbie and Jenner; and one brother, Michael (Linda) Smith of Galesburg, Ill.
Dave was a 6th grade teacher for Morton Unit School District 709. He began his elementary teaching career at Groveland Elementary School and finished at Jefferson Elementary. Dave was a great teacher and storyteller to students, friends and family, and loved going to work.
He was a former member of Morton United Methodist Church and the Morton Jaycees. He was a member and past president of the Morton Education Association.
He enjoyed making his own fishing flies, photography, woodworking and home building projects. Dave also enjoyed vacationing and traveling with his family.
Cremation has been accorded. A celebration of life service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 7, 2016, at Knapp-Johnson Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Morton, with the Rev. Kevin Boesen officiating. Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 6, and one hour prior to the service on Thursday, both at the funeral home.
