Jefferson was born about 1806 in South Carolina.
He appears, as Jefferson Smith, in the 1830 census for Walton County, Georgia, the 1840 census for Gwinnett County, Georgia, and the 1850 and 1860 censuses for Walton County. However, in 1870 (still in Walton County) he is listed as Jefferson Box. This is possibly a clue to his father's identity.
He died in Walton County, Georgia between 4 May 1870, when he made his will, as Jefferson Smith, and 5 Sept 1870, when it was presented for probate.
