Jefferson was born about 1806 in South Carolina.[1]

He appears, as Jefferson Smith, in the 1830 census for Walton County, Georgia,[2] the 1840 census for Gwinnett County, Georgia,[3] and the 1850[4] and 1860[5] censuses for Walton County. However, in 1870 (still in Walton County) he is listed as Jefferson Box.[6] This is possibly a clue to his father's identity.

He died in Walton County, Georgia between 4 May 1870, when he made his will, as Jefferson Smith, and 5 Sept 1870, when it was presented for probate.[7]
