Isabella (Smith) Hobden was born in Marylebone, Middlesex, England.

Isabella was born in 1879 and passed away in 1955.

Birth and Baptism

Isabella was born in Marylebone on 9 March 1879 ^[1] and Baptised on 11 May the same year. The registrar managed to squeeze in all her names: Isabella Susannah Louisa Elizabeth daughter of Thomas and Isabella Smith of 22 Marylebone Lane. Thomas gave his trade as Glass Painter. ^[2][3].

Early Years

In 1881 Isabella, aged 2, was living with her parents at 9 Westmoreland Street, Portland Place, Marylebone. Both parents were recorded as being Deaf and Dumb but nothing had been noted against Isabella's name. Thomas was working as a Glass Painter^[4][5]

In 1891, Isabella was living with her mother, grandmother Susannah, and her grandmother's husband Charles Bradstreet at 14 Goldbourne Rd Kensington. Isabella's mother was working as a dressmaker.^[6][7].

Marriage and Children

Isabella Susannah Louisa Elizabeth Smith married Henry Hobden on 22 July 1899 in the Parish of St Ann, Westminster, London. Henry George was 24, a bachelor. His profession was jewel case maker. Living at 259 Newport Buildings. His father was Edward Henry Hobden (hotel porter). Isabella was 20, a spinster living at 70 Star St, Edgeware Rd. Her father was Thomas Smith a stained-glass painter. Their witnesses were Thomas Smith and George Edward Hobden^[8][9][10]

Henry and Isabella had children:

• Lydia Katherine born 1904
• Hilda Ethel born 1906
• George William Robert born 1909

In 1901 Henry, Isabella and Mildred were living at 40 William Street. Both Henry and Isabella were registered as Deaf and Dumb^[11][12]

In 1911 the family were living together at 97 Star Street. At the same address were Charles and Susannah Bradstreet. Susannah was Isabella's grandmother.^[13]

In 1921 Henry and Isabella were living at 43a Southampton Street, Camberwell, London. Isabella was engaged in home duties. With them were their four children and Isabella's mother^[14].

In 1929 Isabella and Hery were living at 43a Southampton Street with their children Hilda and Mildred and their friend Herbert Ghent^[15]

In 1939 Henry and Isabella were living at 43A Southampton Way with their daughter Hilda. Also at this address was Herbert Ghent who was to continue to live with the family even after their move to Sussex. Next door at 43B were son-in-law and daughter William and Mildred Kingsley. ^[16]

Shortly after this date, Henry and Isabella moved to Sussex with their children to avoid the bombing in London. They settled in Sompting.

Death

Isabella died, aged 76, on 6 July 1955 in Worthing, Sussex^[17].
