Nell was born in 1892 in Carter County, Tennessee.[1] She was the daughter of John Smith and Olive Traver.
She married Joseph Cox Sr on August 13, 1910 in Carter County, Tennessee.[2] He already had a daughter, Nora who sometimes lived with them and sometimes with her grandmother and uncles.
