Edward was born about 1800. He was the son of James Smith and Ruth Pigot.He was born in Susquehanna, Pennsylvania. He was married to Martha Hammod In about 1833 They possibly had14 children between 1834 and 1857 He passed away about 1884 in Crawford County, Pennsylvania having lived along life of 83 years He is buried in the Smith Cemetery in Blooming Valley, Crawford County, Pennsylvania
